Medicare

If you are over 65 and eligible for Medicare, there are many different products you can choose from. Below are descriptions of the options you have available to you as a Medicare beneficiary:

Original Medicare

Original Medicare consists of two parts. Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers your care when you are in a hospital, skilled nursing facility, and, in certain circumstances, at-home treatment. Medicare and Part B (Medical Insurance) provides coverage for medical services provided by doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals. It covers outpatient care, ambulance services, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. It also covers part-time home care and rehabilitative services, including physical therapy. Original Medicare does not cover prescription drugs.

Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plans

Medicare Advantage is a bundled plan offered by private insurance companies. It replaces your Original Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. Medicare Advantage plans must at least include the same benefits as Original Medicare Part A and Part B. However, most Medicare Advantage plans offer significantly more benefits. These are called supplemental benefits and can include things such as dental, vision, hearing, meal plans, fitness memberships, transportation, and much more. Most Medicare Advantage plans also include Part-D drug coverage.

Part-D Prescription Drug plans provide coverage for your prescription drug needs. These are purchased as stand-alone plans if you have Original Medicare or Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement

Medicare Supplement

Medicare Supplement plans (also known as Medigap plans) are a type of insurance offered by private insurance companies. These plans supplement Original Medicare benefits by covering copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles not covered by Original Medicare. Medicare Supplement plans are standardized and have been given letter designations from A through N. Medicare Supplement plans do not cover prescription drugs.
